Work Life Balance & Employee performance

Introduction

Each person is an integral part of the family in particular and of society as a whole. Work-life balance is a very important phenomenon that causes serious concern among various workers in both the private and public sectors. This goes beyond the priorities of the job role and personal life. It also affects a person's social, psychological, economic and mental well-being. (Dr. Orugbu Lilian Obiageli, Dr. Onyeizugbe Chinedu Uzochukwa & Chukwuemeke Deborah Ngozi, 2015).

Organizations can encourage the work-life balance of employees by offering some of the following:

  • Flexible resumption and closing work hours
  • Remote work options are especially available for children, elderly relatives and employees under their care
  • Social activities in and out of the office to help people connect
  • Encouraging employees to take annual leave
  • Wellness programs that help keep employees in shape, reduce health care costs and reduce absenteeism.

Poor work-life balance can lead to:

  • Lack of Family Time
  • Health Issues/ Stress
  • Fatigue

The Work-Life Balance in Nestle International Management

Nestlé sincerely believes that there should be a good balance between the employee's personal and professional life. Employees who wish to volunteer for social security programs receive support from Nestlé. Likewise, Nestlé encourages flexible and friendly working conditions in order to minimize stress. Every one should find a balance between work and other activities, but as a company, they encourage all our employees to pursue interests outside the workplace. Nestlé supports many cultural events and home study programs around the world. One of the main evidence of a good balance between work and personal life at Nestlé is that it has one of the highest retention rates among the major multinationals in the world.

The Work-Life Balance in ABC Company

Most of the time ABC top management considers their employee's work-life balance. They set flexible working hours, remote work options for designers, doing some social activities with family members (ex: blood donation camps, annual trips, etc.). But there are several issues in the company. They didn’t motivate employees to get annual or any other leaves, sometimes employees have work overload, & didn’t allow to short leaves, etc.

Conclusions

Available evidence suggests that improving human resource practices, especially flexibility in working hours and workplaces, as well as developing care managers, helps improve the balance between work and personal life. Work-life balance programs have been shown to affect workers in terms of hiring, staff retention/turnover, commitment and satisfaction, absenteeism, productivity, and the number of accidents.
