Effective communication in the workplace

Introduction

According to Wikipedia, Workplace communication is the process of exchanging both verbal and non-verbal information and ideas between one person/group and another person/group within an organization. Includes emails, text messages, notes, calls, etc. Effective communication is critical to getting the job done, as well as creating a sense of trust and increasing employee productivity.

§ Employee job satisfaction: Employees feel more valued when they can have upward communication.

§  Positive effect on absenteeism and turnover rates: Communication is important for the employees as it is necessary for the workers to feel they are receiving truthful and updated information from their superiors.

§  Entering global marketplaces: Companies that provide workers with an opportunity to excel in their verbal and non-verbal communication skills find it easier to enter global marketplaces than companies who do not do the same


Barriers To Effective Workplace Communication

There are barriers that can interfere with effective communication. Communication barriers in the workplace can lead to reduced productivity, lower staff morale and lower-than-average customer service.

A communication team helps them achieve their business objectives by developing and implementing external and internal proactive interaction and communication programs. They provide advice, strategy and planning, and also ensure that consistent and reliable specialized communications are addressed to a key internal and external audience by the company's strong communications specialists.

Workplace communication in ABC Company

ABC Company is mainly doing construction works. In construction project starts with tendering. So QS, Project Engineer& Purchasing officer prepare & finalize quotation. Project Manager, Project Engineer & QS most of the times meet clients & discuss the project & negotiate project rates. So, they prepare it before the meetings.

In the construction stage mainly Project Manager, Project Engineer, Technical officers & all supervisors daily discuss their progress & future plans. Then it communicates to foreman & leaders.

In project handover stage Project manager discusses with project engineers & technical officers, then the select way to the method of handing over. Then it conveys to the head office & gets permissions.

Conclusions

Communication may be interrupted due to many communication barriers that can be attributed to the sender or receiver. Therefore, effective communication requires familiarity with barriers. Choosing the right channel for communication is also important because choosing the wrong medium undermines the message.
